What a pleasure it was to facilitate the Healing Words workshop on Saturday. Thank you to those who came and made it the day it was. I am always amazed at what seemingly simple exercises can unearth – for me, as well as those who are working with me. In a safe, contained space, creative writing is so permission giving.
(I know I am a scrappy sparrow)
yet I feel like an eagle soaring
with that clarity of view
seeing the countryside below me
seeing the weather coming.
During some more writing looking at what I like, I realised (again) that my impulse to write has little to do with publication – and yet I hanker after it. Interesting.
Next Healing Words workshop, March 29th: Finding the story, using fairy tales to explore our own and others’ stories. Contact: email@example.com
Plans are afoot to celebrate this innovative and inspiring poet in the town of her birth (Scarborough, North Yorkshire) fifty years after her death. A group of us in Scarborough are determined that this anniversary should be used to encourage people to discover more about Edith and also to explore their own creativity.
So far this is what’s on offer:
1st March 2014, Writing from the Heart. Creative writing workshop using Edith Sitwell’s poem Still Falls the Rain as inspiration. Part of the Stephen Joseph Outreach Festival. Contact: 01723 370541 https://www.sjt.uk.com/
April 2014, Sipping Tea with Edith Sitwell, an hour-long performance/presentation as part of Scarborough Flare (running alongside Books on the Beach festival). Contact: http://www.discoveryorkshirecoast.com 01723 383636.
13th September 2014, Heritage Open Day, Sitwell Library open to the public. Contact: 01723 384500 http://www.woodendcreative.co.uk/
2nd October 2014, National Poetry Day, exhibition and events at Scarborough Library and Woodend Creative Industries Centre. More information to come.
So come along and get involved!
So 2014 is spread out before me like a delightful patchwork of happenings and connections.
The first excitement is the next Healing Words workshop on the 18th of January which I am facilitating. We will be looking at how creative writing might fit into different therapeutic contexts and environments; using music to inspire us; and glancing at the theory/research underpinning this type of work.
